A Land for All Seasons is the title for our 2017 exhibition, which takes place February 5 – March 5, 2017 at Homer Watson House and Gallery in Kitchener, Ontario.  Opening reception is Sunday, February 5 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm.

The show is a collection of celebratory images of Canada, revealing an exuberant use of colour and a love for landscape.  The styles range from realism to abstraction, and reflect the different ways each artist honours the peace, the openness, and the freedoms of this country.

Participating artists are: Deborah Dryden (encaustic), Carol Hughes (watercolour), Kim Johnston (oils, watercolour and pastel), Mary Karavos (paper collage), Jean Loney (mosaic), Leslie Miles (soft pastels and mixed media), Gail Root (oils and chalk pastel), and Susan Strachan Johnson (fibre mixed media).

INTRODUCING CAROL HUGHES

Party TimeCarol Hughes

Carol Hughes did basic studies in fine art and theatre at University of Guelph, before completing a B.A. in English Literature.   She also obtained certificates in French Language and Civilisation from the University of Stockholm in Aix-en-Provence, and Environmental Horticulture from Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario.

After a varied career in communications and public relations, she returned to her rural roots and pursued interests in ecology and the arts, working as a landscape designer, arts administrator, and flower show organiser.  She began painting in watercolour in 2003, continuing to develop her skills through courses at Haliburton School of the Arts and workshops with area art associations.

She has been exhibiting her vibrant, nature-inspired works since 2006.  Her work has been shown at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Gallery, the Holcim Gallery in Milton, the Dam Gallery in Alton, the Guelph Civic Museum, the Barber Gallery in Guelph, the Eden Mills Arts Festival, the Button Factory in Waterloo, and the Lambton Heritage Museum in Grand Bend.

Artist Statement:  In my art, I try to capture the wonder and beauty I see in the natural world.  The changing light and seasons, the marks of time and weathering, wild and garden flowers and fruit, and the powerful landscapes of the Niagara Escarpment are my inspirations.
